The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the Christopher Nolan sci-fi action/heist film, Inception. The film has a group of people who invade a person’s dream to extract secrets. However, in this case, the team was hired to implant a thought into their target.

The quote comes in the middle of the film. The team is attacked by the target’s subconscious and the group is pinned down. They attempt to fight back with guns they can, as they are in a dream world, conjure from out of their imaginations. During the battle, Eames (played by Tom Hardy) pulls out a grenade launcher and delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: Don’t limit your imagination and always dream as big as possible.

From: The Suicide Squad (2021)

Who said it?: Ratcatcher 1

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the live-action DC comic book movie, The Suicide Squad. This is not to be confused with the film that was released in 2016. Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad serves both as a sequel and a reboot of the franchise, which sees various supervillains from DC comics recruited to serve on black ops missions for the US government.

The quote comes near the very end of the film. Overwhelmed by Starro the Conqueror’s zombie-like soldiers, Ratcatcher 2 (played by Daniela Melchior) uses her ability and summons all the city’s rats to attack the alien creature. As she does this, she remembers when she was young and asking her father, Ratcatcher 1 (played by Taika Waititi), as to why he chose to control rats. This is when he gives the quote.

Geek wisdom: Every thing in the world and in the universe has its purpose. Even the tiniest thing you might think as useless still has its uses. This is especially true for people.

Who said it?: Norman Bates

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the classic psychological thriller, Psycho. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the film is basically a woman who embezzled a lot of money and, while on the run, encounters a shy loner named Norman Bates who runs the motel she’s staying in while on the run.

The quote comes early in the film. Marion Crane (played by Janet Leigh) overhears Norman Bates (played by Anthony Perkins) arguing with his mother. Marion comments that it might be best to put Norman’s mother “someplace” and this upsets the motel proprietor. He claims that his mother needs him and, while he hates the idea, he too has thought of sending his mother to an institution. He further claims that his mother does act out at times, which is when he delivers the quote.

Geek Wisdom: We all do crazy things. Sometimes, it can be for a moment and sometimes even longer than that. The thing is, it has to be for a short while. It’s okay to lose control at times but you should be able to realize when you’ve gone too far and, maybe, even think twice before doing something during that moment.

Who said it?: Jack Sparrow

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. The movie is based on the theme park ride found in the various Disney theme parks all around the world. The first Pirates of the Caribbean was a huge success and launched an entire film franchise. The series generally follows the adventures of the rogue and eccentric Jack Sparrow.

The quote comes early in the film, The Curse of the Black Pearl. Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp) is captured by the city guards as he is a known pirate. The leader of the guards search Sparrow and comments on how rubbish his equipment is and how basically he is the worst pirate he’s ever heard of. This is when Jack Sparrow delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: It’s best to look at the bright side of things. Even though he’s told he’s not a good pirate, the mere fact that Jack Sparrow is still well known means that he’s doing something right from his point of view.

Who said it?: Hank Hill

The story behind the quote: Once again, I have to show thanks to DJ Miller as he managed to find another wonderful quote for the site. We really appreciate the assistance.

The quote comes from the Fox animated sitcom King of the Hill. The show generally follows the Hill family, particularly the Hill patriarch, Hank Hill, as well as his friends and next door neighbors, as they deal with the someone exaggerated eccentricities of mundane, everyday life of midwestern America.

The quote comes from the 14th episode of the 6th season. Entitled “Of Mice and Little Green Men,” Hank Hill (voiced the series creator Mike Judge) is in the Marfa desert with his friend, Dale. Dale’s son, Joseph, because of a misunderstanding, believe he’s the offspring of aliens and he along with Hank’s son goes to Marfa as it’s been the location of UFO sightings. Dale is worried he’ll be eaten by aliens when Joseph’s “alien” father comes to get him. Hank immediately shuts him down and gives him various times Dale was there for his son. This is when Hank delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: A real father isn’t just there for the conception. A real father is there for there kids, no matter what. It takes a real man to step up and actually care for a child.

Who said it?: Ash Williams

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote come from the comedy horror film, Army of Darkness. It is the third film in the Evil Dead film series, all of which were directed by Sam Raimi. In this movie, Ash Williams, the series protagonist, is sent to medieval times and he attempts to find a way back to his own time.

The quote comes early in the film. After a mysterious forces tosses Ash Williams (played by Bruce Campbell) into a mirror, the shards reform into Evil Ash (also played by Bruce Campbell). Evil Ash taunts the original Ash and punches him several times. Tired of the abuse, original Ash takes out his rifle and shoots his evil doppelganger in the face and delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: Tools are just that: tools. It’s how these tools are used and who uses them that’s more important. Everything can be used for good or bad but it matters who uses them and for what reason.

Who said it?: Forrest Gump

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote, once again, comes from DJ Miller. We thank you for your submission again.

The quote from the very quotable film from 1994 film, Forrest Gump. Based on the book of the same name, Forrest Gump is a person of low IQ but, despite his apparent handicap, he proceeds to go on different new adventures and meet people who would go on to make history, making his life one of the most fulfilling ones ever.

The quote comes from the very first scene of the film. While waiting for a bus, Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks) offers a piece of chocolate from a box. He then remembers one of his mother’s sayings, which just so happens to be the quote in question.

Fun Fact: Most people think the quote goes “Life is like a box of chocolates” but he actually says “was” at this point. Forrest’s mother (played by Sally Field) does say a version of the quote but she says, “Life is a box of chocolates” without the word “like” in it.

I guess people misremember the quote because the way we remember it is grammatically correct.

Geek wisdom: Life is full of surprises and you never really know what will happen next. Sometimes good things will happen. Sometimes bad things will happen. But that’s just how life goes.

Who said it?: Milton Waddams

The story behind the quote: Office Space is a cult classic movie from Mike Judge, the creator of Beavis and Butt-head. The story generally focuses of a group of frustrated office workers who work for Initech, a software company, with their manager, Bill Lumberg. One of them gets accidentally hypnotized to enter a state of complete relaxation. So much so that he openly displays his lack of motivation while in the office. Oddly enough, this gets him promoted to a managerial position while his friends, despite trying their best to keep their jobs, are set to be downsized. This is a very rough summary and I know I’m not doing justice to this film describing it. Suffice to say, it deserves its cult classic status. There are a lot of scenes in this movie that are hilarious and memorable.

The quote happens near the start of the film. Milton (played by Stephen Root) is talking to his co-league Peter Gibbons and complaining about how management has been moving the location of his desk. He also mentions that, even though the company has switched staplers, he managed to keep his red Swingline stapler and, while delivering the quote, exclaims how important it is to him.

It is worth mentioning that, while Milton didn’t push through with what he said when his prized Swingline stapler was absconded, he did eventually burn down the office building because of all the abuse he was getting.

Geek wisdom: People will reach a breaking point. Even the meekest of people will suddenly snap when the pressure is too much. So it may be wise to never abuse others as this actually might be the last straw for them… and it always pays to be nice to people, by the way.

Who said it?: Announcer before every match… and Daisuke Ishiwatari who sang “Smell of the Game”

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the latest entry of Arc System Work’s long-running fighting game franchise, Guilty Gear Strive. Guilty Gear is known for its very frantic action, hard rock/metal soundtrack and anime styled aesthetic. Created by Daisuke Ishiwatari, the man also composes most of the songs of the games.

The quote actually comes up a couple of times in Guilty Gear Strive. It was first revealed during the interlude portion of Strive’s main theme song, Smell of the Game.

The other time the quote is mentioned is during the fight intros before each match. As the fighters enter the area, the announcer delivers the quote each and every time, provided you don’t choose to skip it.

Geek wisdom: For some people, it can be so much easier to not see our own faults but rather put the blame of our imperfections on others. What they don’t realize is that they lose the chance to actually improve themselves. Focus on your weaknesses and try to find ways to better yourself rather than trying to fault others for your limits.

Who said it?: Geralt of Rivia

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the video game The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. The games, developed by CD Projekt Red, are based on the books written by Andrzej Sapkowski. You control Geralt of Rivia, a witcher who is one of the few people who have the necessary skills to defeat the magical beasts and evils of the land.

You can only hear the quote by helping Geralt’s old flame, Triss Merigold, and her quest to help the remaining mages of Novigrad to escape the land. If he is successful, the mages do escape but the kingdom then turn their attention to the lesser races and start hunting them down.

Geek wisdom: People fear others who are different than what they are. Whether it be race, color, religion, political alignment or even gender, this fear can be twisted to simply blaming all our woes on who’s not on our side. If we focus on our similarities and not our differences, maybe the world would be a better place.
