“Choose life.”

From: Trainspotting, T2: Trainspotting… and a T-Shirt

Genre: Movies

Who said it?: Mark “Rent Boy” Renton

The story behind the quote: This quote actually comes from a litany of sources but it’s most popular coming from the the black comedy film from 1996 Trainspotting. The film is about a heroin addict named Mark “Rent Boy” Renton (played by Ewan MacGregor) and his friends and their generally drug fueled lifestyle. The film eventually spawned a sequel, T2: Trainspotting, which reunited pretty much the entire cast from the first film.

The quote is usually said at the very start, followed by a long monologue of other things you can “choose.” In Trainspotting, Mark Renton delivers it over a voiceover while running away from something.

In T2: Trainspotting, Mark Renton delivers an updated monologue to reflect the modern time period…

Oh, and Renton was upfront saying that the original meaning of this week’s quote was from an anti-drug campaign in the 1980’s anti-drug slogan. In fact, it was pretty big in some areas and it was even put on t-shirts. In fact, if you look at George Michael’s shirt in Wham’s! music video of Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, you can actually see it plastered on it.

Geek wisdom: There is so much in life that is good but you have to choose to live first. You have to choose life before you can actually start to enjoy what it can offer.

GeekWisdom is now My Geek Wisdom!

I’ve been posting a lot of quotes on this website for roughly two years and I’ve decided to make it an “official” website. Instead of being just another WordPress blog, GeekWisdom now has its own domain!

Unfortunately, I’m unable to register geekwisdom.com since someone already got it. So, instead, the site is being renamed “My Geek Wisdom” (which was one of the original titles I was considering) and can be found by going to:

http://www.mygeekwisdom.com

There are going to be a couple of changes to the site in the future as well but I’ll start out slowly with this name change since this is going to be somewhat of an adjustment as it is!

Anyway, if you have any suggestions for entries, such as any memorable quotes from movies, video games, television shows and the like, please leave them in the comments section below! If I can think of any Geek Wisdom that can be squeezed from it, you’ll get the proper credit.

Thanks for all your support and I hope you continue visiting the site!

It’s been two years to the day…

No GeekWisdom today. I just realized that I’ve been doing this thing for 2 whole years now! I honestly didn’t think that I could go for so long doing this!

This was just born from a small idea that we can pull all sorts of useful anecdotes from movie, TV, video game and comic quotes we use pretty much all the time. But I never thought that I would be able to keep on making one post a week. I thought I would run out of quotes in one year! I’m pretty amazed I’ve lasted for two!

Still, I will eventually run out of quotes to write about (I only watch so many movies and TV shows, etc.) so, if you have some quotes you can think of, you can leave them in the comments section below! Or you can email me them directly at mygeekwisdom@gmail.com.

Also, please check out the other websites I contribute to!

3rdworldgeeks.com or thirdworldgeeks.com (yep, they both work)

This is a site where I can just write about geeky stuff. I do a quick editorial post once a week (Fiefo’s Editorial) as well a a review of… well, anything (the aptly named I’ll Review Anything).

There’s also another writer there who has her own column because she wanted to write stuff (Robin’s Adventures). If you have time, please read some of her stuff.

Gamemoir.com

It’s a pretty new gaming site with a pretty unique concept. Instead of posting news and reviews, Gamemoir is a video gamer lifestyle website. The content is more about the experiences we all feel as gamers. There’s a lot of us writing there and I hope you support the site!

Thanks for everyone who’s been reading this stuff for the past two years! Here’s to (hopefully) many more to come.

GeekWisdom in need of new quotes

Hello everyone!

I realized that I’ve been doing this GeekWisdom thing for a while (a year and a half already!) and I’ve been having fun wracking my brain remembering TV, movie and video game quotes and trying to extract some wisdom from them. But, right now, I’m pretty much stretching my memory getting really memorable quotes at this time. Also, it’s also been a problem finding the quotes, especially on YouTube (since a lot of the quotes that I would want to put here are either not there because of copyright issues or they can’t be embedded).

Anyway, if any of you guys and gals reading this have any quotes that I may have missed or would like to get some geek wisdom from, please add them in the comments for this post. I promise I’ll give the proper credits necessary.

Thanks!

Geek Wisdom is coming back home!

Hello everyone.

Well, my stint for writing for Unreality has come to a close. While I am disappointed that I will not be writing for them anymore, I do understand that it was a great opportunity and I loved the fact that I was given the chance to do so.

This doesn’t mean that I’ll stop putting out Geek Wisdom. Rather, I’ll be returning here and start posting here again!

Thanks to Paul Tassi for giving me the chance to do some work for them and I do hope that, if anyone is reading this, you’ll also visit their site as well.

Quick update regarding the future of Geek Wisdom

Hello everyone!

First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone who’ve been reading my musing on Geek Wisdom. I do appreciate all of the Likes and comments that I have received since I have started writing this personal project of mine. While I’ve never really posted anything here other than those nuggets of knowledge, I have something important to write about regarding the future of this site.

Unreality will be making Geek Wisdom a regular weekly feature on their site! Unfortunately, this also means that I will not be able to actually post the full Geek Wisdom article on this site anymore. As a compromise, I will be posting a quick teaser here and the direct link to the weekly Geek Wisdom post on Unreality.

I hope that all of you visit Unreality as well and read the other articles since they are pretty good overall.

Thanks again to all of the people that have been reading! I really, really, really appreciate it!

Regards,

Victor “Fiefo!” de la Cruz

PS: I guess I’ll take this opportunity as well to ask for some assistance in the future. If you have any particular quotes you would like to contribute and see if it can be made into Geek Wisdom, please write it in the comments.
