“I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

From: When Harry Met Sally

Genre: Movies

Who said it?: Harry Burns

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from When Harry Met Sally, a film about two people, Harry (played by Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) and their somewhat long “on and off” relationship. It has become one of the most beloved movies of all time. Although the film has become more memorable because of the “I’ll have what she’s having” quote, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any more beloved saying from the film

The quote actually comes from the very end of the film. During a New Year party, Sally Albright (played by Meg Ryan) decides to leave early as she’s depressed her friendship with Harry Burns (played by Billy Crystal) had just ended. However, just before Sally leaves, Harry rushes in and declares his love for her. Sally thinks that Harry is just saying that because he feels lonely as it’s New Year’s Eve. Harry then tells Sally about all her little quirks she makes and how he loves her even more because of them before delivering the quote.

Geek wisdom: We all like to dance around our feeling and keep them bottled up inside. We can sometimes be too scared to express our love for someone else for fear of rejection or being shunned. However, the more you delay telling that person you love someone, the more you are going to be missing out on actually being with them.

“Now I have a machine gun. Ho-ho-ho.”

From: Die Hard

Genre: Movies

Who said it?: John McClaine through Hans Gruber

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the “Christmas” movie, Die Hard. The film was a surprise hit and launched Bruce Willis into stardom.

The quote comes from the middle of the film after Hans Gruber (played by the late Alan Rickman) and his group had taken over the Nakatomi building. John McClaine had just killed Tony Vreski after a long, brutal fight but he managed to come out on top. McClaine decides to send a message to Hans Gruber by using the elevator to send Tony’s body… but he does leave a not so subtle message about the new armament he now has…

Geek wisdom:  Picking out a gift for someone shouldn’t really be that hard. Everyone wants something different for Christmas. Sometimes, it may be just something they want. Sometimes, it may be something they need. In order to figure it out, you have to understand that person’s situation and know what they would appreciate. All you have to do is pay attention to that person and notice these things.

“I’m loyal to nothing, General… except the Dream.”

From: Captain America (but specifically from Daredevil #233)

Genre: Comics

Who said it?: Captain America

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from a very old comic but the saying still rings true, especially during these troubled times.

This week’s quote comes from Captain America, who made a guest appearance in Daredevil Issue #233. In the issue, Daredevil is in the middle of a battle against the supervillain known as Nuke. Daredevil manages to take out Nuke but the Avengers, who were busy helping civilians during the fight, arrest Nuke afterwards. Later, Captain America meets up with Daredevil and the patriotic hero asks The Man Without Fear who Nuke is. Daredevil retorts and tells Captain America to ask his “superiors” (the US government) who Nuke is, as Nuke has the United States flag tattooed on his face.

Captain America does just that and asks one of the generals who Nuke really is. The general hints that the information is classified and that, as a patriot and a good soldier, Captain America should stop looking into to. This is when Captain America delivers the quote while holding on the flag of the USA.

Geek wisdom: People nowadays seem to be taking sides. It may be about political ideals on how people have become too conservative/liberal. Or it could be how one’s lifestyle is corrupting the world we live in and we denounce the “other side.” We are currently dividing ourselves needlessly because we all want the best for ourselves and everyone. The worst thing is that we become loyal to one “side” just because of our race, religion or party alignment without even taking a step back to think for ourselves if the “side” we’re on actually falls on what we believe in.

“Kept you waiting, huh?”

From: Metal Gear Solid series

Genre: Video Games

Who said it?: Solid Snake, Naked Snake and Big Boss

The story behind the quote: Before anything else, I’d like to give an extremely belated shoutout to Pouria Memarvar who gave me the idea for this quote…

The quote comes from the Metal Gear Solid series of games. The series is the brainchild of Hideo Kojima and the man has directed every single Metal Gear Solid game but that was before his falling out with Konami. It’s hard to say what Konami will do with the series now that Kojima is out of the picture and it’s difficult to see if other Metal Gear Solid games will actually be good since a lot of what made the games great was Kojima’s rather cinematic way of telling a story… which is probably why the man with the “Snake” codename (whether it be Solid, Snake or Naked Snake/Big Boss) says the quote in practically all installments of the game.

Geek wisdom: Patience is a virtue. It can be maddening to be waiting for something to happen but, most of the time, the wait will be worth it.

“It’s only game. Why you heff to be mad?”

From: YouTube/The Score

Genre: Video Games, Internet

Who said it?: Ilya Bryzgalov

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from an old viral video involving, of all things, hockey. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a whole lot of wisdom here.

In 2006, a prominent Edmonton Oilers player named Chris Pronger was traded to the Anaheim Ducks. This was a controversial trade at the time and Edmonton Oilers fans became upset with the player. This led to an interview with the goalie for the Anaheim Ducks, Ilya Bryzgalov. He was asked about his thoughts on the trade and what he thought about why fans are upset. This led to the Russian giving the quote in reply.

Geek wisdom: We can take things a little too seriously at times. If we become extremely passionate about something, we can even take things a little too far. Sometimes, it’s best to take things in perspective and check whether something is important enough to be upset about.
