how i met your mother

“When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.”

From: How I Met Your Mother

Genre: Television

Who said it?: Barney Stinson

The story behind the quote: This week’s episode comes from one of the most popular sitcoms in recent history, How I Met Your Mother. More specifically, it comes from the mouth of the most awesome characters in television history, Barney Stinson. True story.

The quote comes specifically from the first episode of the second season of the show. Marshall had just broken up with Lily and the rest of the gang are discussing the issue. Barney (played awesomely by Neil Patrick Harris) is his usual self and rather insensitive to the plight of his friends. He explains that Marshall should just stop being sad and then he delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: Whenever life gets you down, you have the ability to change how you feel. If you’re down on your luck, do something to change your luck. Don’t mope around. Be the master of your own fate.

“Have you met Ted?”

Who said it?: Barney Stinson

The story behind the quote: The quote comes from the hit CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, specifically from Barney Stinson (played by Neil Patrick Harris). Barney is a serial womanizer who uses various tricks and ruses in order to meet women and sleep with them. As the series progresses, Barney does forego his old ways and decides to marry Robin, as currently seen in the season finale which is airing as of this writing.

During the first few seasons, however, Barney does try to help Ted Mosby, who he considers to be his “best friend,” with meeting new women using the quote mentioned.

Geek wisdom: As we get older, it seems to get more difficult to meet new people. We get tongue tied or we’re afraid to embarrass ourselves or we’re just don’t have the confidence to go up to a complete stranger and introduce ourselves.

This quote actually shows how easy it is to meet people. So, go out and introduce yourself to someone new. Who knows? Like in the show, you may be telling your kids the story of how you met their mother because of this.

“Challenge accepted!”

The story behind the quote: The quote comes from the hit CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother (abbreviated as HIMYM). The premise of the series is that the narrator, the future Ted Mosby, is telling his children the story of how he met their mother. However, he just doesn’t tell them the story about how they met (that would be a very short sitcom). Rather, he sits them down and relates the events in his life that led to him meeting his mother. Ted says it’s important to tell them all of that since, because of everything he went through, he became the man their mother fell in love with.

Anyway, the quote comes from Barney Stinson (played by Neil Patrick Harris). This is actually one of his catchphrases. Barney will utter these words when someone makes an off-hand comment about something that cannot be done. He will then try to perform the “impossible” (even though “the challenge” wasn’t even issuing a challenge in the first place).

Geek wisdom: People generally don’t want to tackle problems. They would rather not deal with issues and the problems of life. However, if we do not accept these challenges life gives us, they will always prevent us from getting better.

We should always be ready to accept these challenges and strive to overcome them. It is difficult but, once you do defeat the problem, then the problem doesn’t have to bother you anymore.
