From: Breaking Bad
Genre: Television
Who said it?: Walter White/Heisenberg
The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the critically acclaimed AMC crime drama Breaking Bad. The show is all about a high school chemistry school teacher named Walter White who contracts cancer. In the hopes of making enough money for his family before he passes, he decides to enter the illegal business of making a special kind of crystal meth. However, as the series progressed, the mild mannered Walter White (played by Bryan Cranson) turns more devious and brutal and constructs the persona of Heisenberg in order to keep his normal family life safe.
The quote comes from the 4th season episode entitled “Cornered.” Walter’s wife, Skyler, tries to convince him to turn himself over to the police as the business seems to be getting too dangerous. However, by this time, Walter has become more like his Heisenberg persona and, as he’s really good at making the illegal drug, his pride will not have him stop now. This is when Water gives one of the most memorable and powerful monologues from the show…
Geek wisdom: Everyone has a dark side to themselves. A lot of the times, we try to keep it hidden. But there are going to be times when this side of ourselves will come out. Now, whether it’s right to keep this part of ourselves locked up depends on the situation. There are going to be times when we have to become “the danger” to let everyone know that we can’t be pushed over so easily.
