“Once you’re at rock bottom, the only way forward is up.”

From: Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Genre: Video Games

Who said it?: Ichiban Kasuga

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote is another submission from Sabari Girish Srinivasan. He’s written previously about a quote from the Assassin’s Creed games. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you once againthe great submission as he did a wonderful job of writing up all of the details. The quote comes from the Sega action-adventure game, Yakuza: Like A Dragon.

The quote comes from the very end of the game. In fact, it comes after the ending credits. Ichiban Kasuga ponders over the death of a friend he had been close to for most of his life. The latter had taken an incorrect and dangerous path to shroud his insecurities, without considering the consequences the affected might face, and paid the heaviest price.

Ichiban speaks from experience as his life threw curveballs at every stage of his life, but the man was never swept away by hatred and still maintained his innocence and joy. No matter what happened to him, no matter who betrayed him, Ichiban never lost his smile and always gave the other person another chance as he firmly believed that he was the man who he was because of the various second chances he had received over the years.

Geek wisdom: The subtle message in this quote is to never lose hope. Ichiban asks the listener to keep looking and moving forward, as the world will always find ways to push a stubborn and passionate heart forward.

“I’m looking for sailors.”

From: Shenmue

Genre: Video Games

Who said it?: Ryo Hazuki

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the Sega Dreamcast game, Shenmue. Created by Yu Suzuki, the game is one of, if not, the first open world game. You control a young martial artist named Ryo Hazuki. He is searching for Lan Di, the man who murdered his father. The game has spawned, as of this writing, three sequels, with the latest game, Shenmue III, only coming out in 2019, 20 whole years after the first game came out.

The quote isn’t an exact quote but it has become a meme of sorts. At one point of the quest, Ryu (voiced by Corey Marshall) has to find a certain group of sailors in order to continue with his quest. One of the amazing things about Shenmue is that you can talk with practically everyone and Ryo will ask a question pertaining to that quest. Unfortunately, it does sound silly as he just asks the question without any real context…

Geek wisdom: While it may seem silly to others, it may be best to ask questions and request for help when you need it. Some people may react disagreeably but, if you do need assistance, it much better than just walking around blindly.

“Rise from your grave.”

From: Altered Beast

Genre: Video Games

Who said it?: Zeus

The story behind the quote: The quote comes from the “classic” sidescrolling beat ’em up, Altered Beast. The original game was actually an arcade game but Altered Beast only reached prominence when the Sega ported the game over to their 16-bit Genesis console. The game’s plot has Zeus resurrecting two Roman centurions and charge them with rescuing Athena from the Underworld. The game’s main gimmick is the characters transforming into different beasts like werewolves, dragons and tigers.

The quote actually comes from the 16-bit port of the game. When the game starts, Zeus commands the player to… well, you know.

Geek wisdom: We are not immortal and we all have to pass away from this world some time. However, we can still become “immortal” in a sense if we manage to leave a legacy before our time in the world ends.

Don’t let your time in this world be a waste. Make yourself be remembered.
