“I’m looking for sailors.”

From: Shenmue

Genre: Video Games

Who said it?: Ryo Hazuki

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the Sega Dreamcast game, Shenmue. Created by Yu Suzuki, the game is one of, if not, the first open world game. You control a young martial artist named Ryo Hazuki. He is searching for Lan Di, the man who murdered his father. The game has spawned, as of this writing, three sequels, with the latest game, Shenmue III, only coming out in 2019, 20 whole years after the first game came out.

The quote isn’t an exact quote but it has become a meme of sorts. At one point of the quest, Ryu (voiced by Corey Marshall) has to find a certain group of sailors in order to continue with his quest. One of the amazing things about Shenmue is that you can talk with practically everyone and Ryo will ask a question pertaining to that quest. Unfortunately, it does sound silly as he just asks the question without any real context…

Geek wisdom: While it may seem silly to others, it may be best to ask questions and request for help when you need it. Some people may react disagreeably but, if you do need assistance, it much better than just walking around blindly.

Most of my childhood (and adult life) was spent doing a lot of geeky stuff: watching TV, playing video games and going to the movies. To some, it may have been a waste of time. Well, to me, it has made me what I am today... a geeky adult. I actually write for a couple of blogs, namely: geekwisdom.wordpress.com 3rdworldgeeks.com gamemoir.com Please check them out!
