Who said it?: A lot of people… but it’s Chef Gusteau’s motto
The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the Pixar animated film, Ratatouille. The film is about a rat named Remy (voiced by Patton Oswald) who loves fine dining and learns to become a great cook, thanks to watching his favorite chef, Chef Gusteau (voiced by Brad Garrett). He then accidentally becomes partners with a young man named Linguini, the son of Gusteau, and together they try to become one of the greatest chefs in all of France.
The quote is actually mentioned several times throughout the film as it is Chef Gusteau’s motto. However, it is at its most poignant during the closing moments of the film where Remy decides to serve food critic Anton Ego (voiced by Peter O’Toole) the titular dish. The critic is astonished by the dish but is even more shocked when he learns a rat prepared his meal. He then proceeds to write a review that does include Gusteau’s motto…
Geek wisdom: We often put limits on ourselves. We can immediately think that something will be too hard to do even before we even try. The thing is anyone can do anything as long as you’re willing to put in the time and effort to do so. You may never become the best at whatever that thing is but that’s not to say you won’t be good or, at the very least, competent at it. The greatest crime is to not even try at all.
Who said it?: Adam Savage and the rest of the Mythbusters crew
The story behind the quote: The quote comes the Discovery Channel show Mythbusters. The show has been on air since 2003 and is set to air its final season this year. Mythbusters is all about taking various myths, movie scenes, idioms, viral internet videos and such, and testing them using scientific methods to see how true they all are by attempting to recreating them.
The quote is sort of the television show’s motto. It’s generally credited to Adam Savage, one of the original Mythbusters along with Jamie Hyneman. It’s been said and mentioned throughout the entire series’ run, especially when something does go wrong.
Geek wisdom: The general public tells us that we can’t make mistakes. But, in actuality, you can. It’s okay to get something wrong at times as it teaches us that it was a mistake. We can learn a lot of things through experiencing not only our successes, but we can obtain knowledge from failure as well.

Who said it?: The Robinsons Family
The story behind the quote: The quote comes from Disney/Pixar’s Meet The Robinsons. The film is about a boy named Lewis, an aspiring child inventor that hasn’t had that much success. During a science fair, he meet Wilbur Robinson, a boy who claims to come from the future. Wilbur enlists the help of Lewis as he’s the only one that can help him repair his time machine and assist him in the capture of the mysterious “bowler hat” guy who has stolen a more advance prototype time machine and will use it to destroy the current timeline.
The quote, actually The Robinson’s family motto, is said several times. However, the motto is most remembered in one scene where Lewis attempts to repair a gadget. Unfortunately, the gadget malfunctions and creates a colossal mess. Lewis tries to apologies as he expects The Robinsons to get angry. However, the family reacts in the opposite way…
Geek wisdom: It’s very easy to give up when you fail. After all, you’ve didn’t succeed in your task, so why bother even trying? But the thing is we shouldn’t get discouraged from our mistakes and we shouldn’t give up. Rather, we should learn from our mistakes! It’s actually okay to commit mistakes. What’s not okay is we keep repeating the same mistakes and not learn from them.
