“For years, I’ve been treating the Hulk like he’s some kind of disease, something to get rid of. But then I started looking at him as the cure.”

From: Avengers: Endgame

Genre: Movies

Who said it?: Bruce Banner/The Hulk

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Avengers: Endgame. The movie was the climax of a decades long story that started way back in 2009 with Iron Man. The heroes have been defeated but it turns out there is still something they can do to, at the very least, set things right to the way things were.

The quote comes during the start of the movie. Captain America and Black Widow take Ant-Man to see Bruce Banner (played by Mark Ruffalo). However, instead of seeing a mindless monster or a meek scientist, Banner finally figured out how to merge both his Hulk side and his normal side into one being. He explains that, when they lost in the previous film, it was doubly hard on him as he lost twice. This is when he delivered the quote.

Geek wisdom: Sometimes, the thing you think is your greatest weakness can actually be made into your greatest strength. It’s just all about how you can utilize whatever you have in yourself and make it work for you.

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the first Avengers movie. The film is the culmination of years of planning on Marvel comics part to create a vast cinematic universe. The film was one of the most anticipated movies of 2012 and was both a critical and financial success as Marvel took the risk of actually assembling all of the superheroes that appeared in their previous films into one film.

The quote comes during the climatic battle scene. Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston), who is leading the alien Chitauri in an invasion of Earth, is attacked by The Hulk (voice acted by Mark Ruffalo, who also portrays The Hulk’s alter ego, Bruce Banner). Loki, incenses by Hulk’s show of brute force against him, yells at the gamma irradiated hero. The god chastises The Hulk for even attacking him as the “creature” is beneath him. However, his speech is cut short as Hulk proceeds to toss him around like a rag doll. After the beating, The Hulk delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: There may be times when you feel like you are untouchable and you are the best in the world. However, this is simply not true as there will always be someone better than you. And even if it is fact that you are the best in the world at something, if you rest on your laurels, there will be always be someone trying to become better than you.

Who said it?: Virtually every member of the Avengers at one time or another

The story behind the quote: The quote comes from the super hero team known as the Avengers. The Avengers are “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” and are composed of a myriad of Marvel’s comic book heroes. The first issue of The Avengers tells the team’s original origin tale:

In a bid to defeat his half-brother Thor, Loki tricks The Hulk to go on a rampage. As The Hulk’s sidekick, Rick Jones, send a distress radio call to the Fantastic Four, Loki diverts it but is intercepted by Iron Man, Wasp and Ant-Man. The trio, as well as Thor and The Hulk manage to defeat Loki. Wasp then decides they five of them should join forces. And the Avengers were formed.

The roster has added and lost members as the years passed. Usually, the team is led into battle by Captain America. However, that doesn’t mean that he’s the only one that can summon the Avengers. In fact, any Avengers team member can summon the rest of the group using the quote.

Avengers Assemble

Geek wisdom: There is no shame in asking for assistance when you need help. It’s a common misconception for a lot of individuals to even refuse help as they feel it makes them look weak. Actually, it’s the opposite; it is actually a sign of strength and maturity to know your shortcomings and request for the support of others.

Don’t be ashamed to request for the aid of others.

“That’s my secret, Captain. I’m always angry.”

The story behind the quote: The Avengers is a movie released in 2012. It is the culmination of Marvel’s long string of movies, starting with the first Iron Man film (released in 2008). The basic premise is that Loki, Thor’s brother, has allied with a race of aliens who plan to take over the Earth. Earth’s mightiest superheroes, which include Iron Man and Captain America, have to team up to prevent this from happening.

The quote comes from Bruce Banner, the scientist who becomes the Hulk when angered. Iron Man has managed to lead a giant monster towards the rest of the heroes. Captain America suggests to Bruce Banner that he needs to get angry immediately to take the monster down. Bruce Banner calmly turns to the Captain, delivers the quote and instantly turns into the Hulk to take the beast down.

Geek wisdom: Emotions are actually powerful tools. Being angry can help motivate people to do things immediately. It can help you get results. But, since anger is an emotion, and emotions are tools, we have to be able to control it. The problem is we usually let our emotions control us.

While Bruce Banner may always be angry, he manages to control the monster within himself by controlling the emotion. He only lets it out when it is necessary. We should also be that way.
