“Am I so out of touch? No, it’s the children who are wrong.”

From: The Simpsons

Genre: Cartoons, Television

Who said it?: Principal Skinner

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the longest running animated series in the United States, The Simpsons. The show has been on for numerous seasons and counting and is a general smorgasbord for quotes.

The quote comes from the 5th season episode, entitled “The Boy Who Knew Too Much.” In the episode, Bart Simpson passes a fake note to his teacher to skip school. Principal Skinner (voiced by Harry Shearer) rightfully believes the note is fake and tries to catch Bart in the act of truancy. He goes to the places he liked to visit as a kid but neither sees Bart no any other truant children. He starts second guessing himself but then dismisses it, delivering the quote.

Geek wisdom: As time moves on, things change. What was once okay can be thought of as despicable later down the line. The opposite can also be true in that what was once thought of to be terrible can turn out to be okay in the future. All we can do is adapt to the new situation and never stay rigid in our own ways.

“Well, my family can’t live in ‘good intentions,’ Marge!”

From: The Simpsons

Genre: Cartoons, Television

Who said it?: Ned Flanders

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from one of the episodes of The Simpsons. As one of the longest running shows ever (and since I’ve already used a lot of Simpsons quotes in the past), this show needs no introduction anymore.

The quote comes from the 8th season episode entitled “Hurricane Neddy.” In the episode, Ned Flanders’ house is destroyed by a hurricane. The townsfolk gets together to help rebuild the domicile but, because of how shoddy the workmanship is, it instantly is brought to the ground when Homer Simpson closes the front door. Flanders (voiced by Harry Shearer) uncharacteristically lets his anger boil over and berates everyone. Marge tries to defend the people of the town by saying they only had the best intentions. This is when Flanders delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: Sure, doing good things for the right reasons may sound nice. But, unless you actually do your best, good intentions really don’t matter.

“So, professor, would you say it’s time for everyone to panic?”

From: The Simpsons

Genre: Cartoons, Television

Who said it?: Kent Brockman

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the longest running animated series in the United States, The Simpsons. And, with the current situation affecting the world thanks to the coronavirus outbreak, it’s a rather apt quote.

The quote comes from the 11th episode of the 5th season of The Simpsons. The episode is entitled Homer the Vigilante, wherein a spree of cat burglaries occur in the town of Springfield. Kent Brockman (voiced by Harry Shearer) who quickly heighten the fears the citizens of the town by insinuating that the cat burglaries will escalate into mass murders. He then turns to a professor and delivers the quote, to which the professor agrees.

Later, when the entire population is hunting down a mysterious treasure, Kent Brockman then escalates the issue again.

Geek wisdom: In times of crisis, it’s always best to try to keep a cool head. If you panic, you will be prone to do more unsafe and even dangerous actions that may do more harm than good. This goes for everyone, especially for the citizens and the people who are supposed to protect them.
