Who said it?: Kylo Ren/Ben Solo

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote initially comes from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This is the first entry in the latest trilogy of the franchise.

The quote comes from near the end of the film. Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford) confronts his son Ben Solo (played by Adam Driver), who has adopted the Sith moniker Kylo Ren. Han pleads with his son to come back to him. Ben/Kylo is hesitant because he is unsure of what to do. He delivers the quote before stabbing his own father.

Later on, in The Rise of Skywalker, the concluding film to this trilogy, there is a scene that does mirror the events. This time, it has Han Solo returning as a memory of Kylo Ren. Kylo Ren then says the exact same line before choosing to shun the Dark Side.

Geek wisdom: Sometimes, the thing that is right for you may be the hardest thing to do. It will take great courage and strength to follow your heart because there are going to be consequences to your actions. But if it’s the right thing to do for yourself, then it’s the right thing.

“Snakes! Why did it have to be snakes?”

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. This is the film that launched a franchise, which not included a series of movies, but a live-action television series as well as various video games. The film introduces the series’ protagonist, archeologist and professor Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones, as he hunts for the Biblical Ark of the Covenant.

The quote comes from the the middle of the film. Indiana Jones (played by Harrison Ford) finds the location of the Well of Souls, the place where the Ark of the Covenant is supposed to be hidden. When his partner Sallah (played by John Rhys-Davies) comments that he thinks the floor is moving, Indy drops a torch in the Well of Souls and discovers that the room is full of snakes. While Indy can usually brave anything, he does have a thing for snakes…

Geek wisdom: Although Indiana Jones has a phobia of snakes, he still did jump down to try to retrieve the Ark of the Covenant. That’s what true bravery is. Being brave isn’t not being scared of anything. True bravery is facing your fear and powering through, even if every fiber of your being is telling you to run away.

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the Ridley Scott cult classic, Blade Runner. The film is all about a man named Rick Deckard, the titular Blade Runner of this story, and his search for four rogue Replicants who have made it to Earth. The film didn’t actually do all that well when it was released in 1982 as most critics felt the pace of the film was too slow. However, as the film gained cult status due to its incredibly deep story and Ridley Scott’s beautiful vision of a gritty future, the film has gained more notoriety and has influenced many directors of today.

The quote actually from the end of the film as Roy Batty (played by Rutger Hauer) had just saved Deckard (played by Harrison Ford) from falling off a building. Realizing that he is dying due to the nature of Replicants having short life spans, Batty laments on the experiences he had accumulated and delivers what is now known as the “tears in rain” monologue, in a sense, proving that he does have a soul and human.

Geek wisdom: A huge part of what makes us human is our experiences in life. These collective experiences are all that help form our very unique individuality. We are all interconnected by these experiences but we may not feel the same way or experience them the same way. That doesn’t make them any less significant, though, as they have meaning to you or someone else.

Ultimately, however, when we do leave this mortal coil, those experiences will be lost forever. This is why we have to experience as much of living as we can while possible.

Who said it?: Gaff

The story behind the quote: The quote comes from the neo-noir film Blade Runner. Although it wasn’t a box office hit when it was released in 1982, Blade Runner has achieved cult status thanks to the incredibly creative world that Ridley Scott created for the film. The story follows one of the titular Blade Runners named Rick Deckard (played by Harrison Ford) and his task to hunt down four rogue replicants, artificial humans, who have traveled to Earth in an attempt to lengthen their short lifespans.

The quote comes from the climax of the film. After one of the replicants Deckard was contracted to “retire” actually saves his life, one of the Blade Runner’s friends, Gaff (played by Edward James Olmos), appears in front of him. They have some banter, hinting that the job is finished and that Deckard might retire as a Blade Runner. Gaff then tosses Deckard a gun and then reminds him of Rachael, the replicant in his apartment. He turns and walks away but stops to deliver the quote.

Geek wisdom: Whether you’re a replicant or an actual human, life is just too short. As life is fleeting, you not only have to enjoy it as much as possible, this also means you only have a scant few years to make your mark in history. Try to live live to its fullest.

“Who’s scruffy looking?”

Who said it?: Han Solo

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from Episode V of the Star Wars films, The Empire Strikes Back. I don’t really think that there’s much I have to say about the franchise as it’s one of the most popular franchises of all time. So, let’s get to the quote!

The quote comes early in the film, just after Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford) rescues Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill) on the icy (and ironically named) planet Hoth. Han Solo then makes a snarky comment to Princess Leia, making it seem like she made the order to ground all flights from leaving the planet to keep him in the base. The confrontation escalates and Leia insults Han by calling him a “half-witted, scruffy looking nerf herder.” Strangely, Han doesn’t have any issues with being called a half-wit or a nerf herder…

Geek wisdom:  People will take offense to the weirdest things. You can call a certain person all kinds of bad things and it will just roll off their back. However, there is a chance you may say the wrong thing to the same person, something you may think is innocuous and unoffensive, and they’re take it as the ultimate form of insult. So, always think first of what you want to say and choose your words carefully as much as possible.

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from Episode VII of the Star Wars film series, The Force Awakens. This film heralded the return of the franchise to the big screen and was met with acclaim from fans and casual audiences alike. Of course, it didn’t hurt that The Force Awakens saw the return of some characters from the original Star Wars trilogy, namely Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess/General Leio Organa and Luke Skywalker.

Speaking of Han Solo (played once again by an aging Harrison Ford), it was he who actually delivered the quote. After Ray, Finn and BB-8 escape from Jakku on the Millennium Falcon, the ship that made the Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs, the legendary ships breaks down and it sucked into a large ship. As Ray, Finn and BB-8 hide in the bowels of the ship, Han Solo and Chewbacca, who have been tracking their long lost ship, board the Millennium Falcon which is when Han says the line.

Geek wisdom: There’s no place like home. No matter where you are in the world, home is usually a place where you can feel safe and secure. It’s a place where you can just be yourself. Once in a while, it’s always a good idea to return home just for you to remember that feeling of security.

From: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Who said it?: An old Knight

The story behind the quote: The Indiana Jones films have always been big blockbusters and it’s not hard to see why. Each of the films takes cues from classic movies but the basic premise is the same. Indiana Jones (played by Harrison Ford) is an archaeologist and has vast knowledge with ancient history, myths and cultures. While he is incredibly smart, he is also an adventurer who is very adept in thinking on his feet during dangerous situations. Indy is also not the type of person to shy away from a fight. It is these traits that has him saving the world from evil doers (usually Nazis) who plan to dig up ancient artifacts that will help them take over the world.

The quote comes from the third film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Here, both the Nazis and Indy are looking for the Holy Grail, which will grant immortality to those who drink from it. Indy gets captured and is forced to pass a series of traps guarding the Holy Grail. Once Indy gets through, Donovan (the main bad guy in the movie) sees that there are a lot of possible Holy Grails. Elsa (another baddie) selects one of the cups (one that has a lot of jewels and is possibly made of gold) and Donovan drinks from it… with bad results.

Indy then makes his choice and selects the one that appears to be a simple bowl. His logic is that the container is probably the one that a simple carpenter would use. He drinks from in and nothing happens to him. This is when the old Knight, who has been guarding the Grail, congratulates him.

Geek wisdom: In this day of age, we seem to rush through a lot of major decisions in life. We tend to not take stock on how important choices can affect us, both in the short term and in the long term. A lot of times, it’s this shortsightedness that can impact us the most, especially if we regret them in the future.

It’s always a good idea to weigh our options just to make an informed decision. Sometimes, all it takes is a few seconds. Other times, it make take hours or even days. It’s okay to mull over life changing decisions.
