“Ain’t no thing like me, ‘cept me.”

From: Guardians of the Galaxy

Genre: Movies

Who said it?: Rocket

The story behind the quote: This quote comes from the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. The Guardians of the Galaxy wasn’t all that well-known outside the comic book community. However, thanks to this movie, their popularity and they’ve became some of the most beloved comic book heroes today.

The quote comes from the middle of the film. Each of the individual characters were captured and sent to a prison planet. Star-Lord (played by Chris Pratt) comments that he wouldn’t have been captured by “a tree and a raccoon” anyway. referring to Groot and Rocket. Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) is confused as, since he’s never been to Earth, doesn’t know what a raccoon is. Star-Lord then tells him he’s a raccoon and Rocket delivers the quote in reply.

Geek wisdom: Even identical twins, while they may look exactly alike, have little differences that makes them unique. No two people will ever be exactly alike because of their strengths and their weaknesses. We should celebrate both of these things as these are what makes each of us unique and special in our own little way.

“He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn’t your daddy.”

From: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Genre: Movies

Who said it?: Yondu

The story behind the quote: The quote comes from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The titular group is formed with an eclectic cast of characters, which include a human being who is part “god,” the adopted daughter of a “mad titan,” a strong but dimwitted man who doesn’t understand sarcasm, the leader of a pirate gang, and a talking raccoon and tree. On paper, it may not seem like a good idea to put these oddities on screen but their films have drawn critical acclaim and box office success.

The quote comes from near the end of the film. Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord (played by Chris Pratt) had just defeated his “god” of  a father, which leads to the planet self-destructing. Yondu (played by Michael Rooker), the space pirate who actually raised Peter in order to protect him from his biological father, manages to save him by flying them into space. He does deliver the quote before expiring from the harshness of outer space.

Geek wisdom: Being a father isn’t just siring a child. Being a father also means being their for the child you created. A real father will make the effort to do right by their children.

“I am Groot.”

From: Guardians of the Galaxy

Genre: Movies

Who said it?: Groot

The story behind the quote: This quote comes from, well, Groot from the Marvel film and surprise hit, Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, it was a surprise that a movie that featured a bunch of Marvel characters that only hardcore comic book collectors know about managed to smash all sorts of box office records!

Anyway, the quote is actually the only thing that Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) can say as explained by Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper).

Actually, the explanation why Groot says just these three words, it turns out it just sounds like he is just saying I Am Groot. Underneath those three little words are a series of inflections and very subtle tonal changes that acts like his vocabulary.

There’s actually an entire language he speaks but you have to be incredibly astute to understand all of those almost negligible changes in pitches and speed to understand him.

Geek wisdom: Sometimes, it’s not what you say but how you say it. In fact, sometimes, the way you say something may change the meaning of the words themselves. Additionally, you have to also remember that actions speak louder than words. While we may not be able to understand what Groot is saying practically all the time, he lets his actions do the talking for him most of the time.
