“Gods? There are no gods here. Only monsters.”

Who said it?: Ciri

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the trailer of the upcoming video game, The Witcher IV. While details are slim regarding this upcoming game by CD Projekt Red, the trailer does hint that, this time around, you will not be controlling Geralt of Rivia. Instead, the trailer does make it appear you will now be controlling his adopted daughter, Ciri.

The quote comes at the very end of the trailer. After Ciri (voiced by Ciara Berkeley in this entry) returns to the village to check on the girl she saved, the Witcher finds her killed by the townsfolk. The people try to defend their actions by claiming she did not follow her duty to be a sacrifice to their so-called gods. This is when Ciri turns to them and delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: There are times when people will do heinous acts but they will sometimes do this, not because they themselves are monsters, but because what they do is good. Whether it be for tradition sake, loyalty to an authority figure or because of an outdated belief system, people do need to stop and think to really see if what they do is good or bad. If not, then they become monsters themselves.

“Witchers watch for answers.”

Who said it?: Geralt of Rivia

The story behind the quote: This week comes from The Witcher television series. Originally a book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher has become a franchise of its own, spawning a hit video game series by CD Projekt Red as well as a television series on Netflix.

The quote comes from the Netflix television series. In the second episode of the second season, entitled Kaer Morhen (which also is the name of the fortress all the Witchers stay), Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavill) talks to his mentor Vesemir (played by Kim Bodnia) and he explains that he brought Ciri to Kaer Morhen to keep her safe. Geralt acknowledges Ciri lied to him when she was asked how she escaped her entire kingdom’s razing. When Vesemir asks Geralt why he didn’t demand for the truth, Geralt delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: Always look for the truth yourself and never simply accept whatever “truth” is given to you.

“Hatred and prejudice will never be eradicated. And witch hunts will never be about witches.”

Who said it?: Geralt of Rivia

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the video game The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. The games, developed by CD Projekt Red, are based on the books written by Andrzej Sapkowski. You control Geralt of Rivia, a witcher who is one of the few people who have the necessary skills to defeat the magical beasts and evils of the land.

You can only hear the quote by helping Geralt’s old flame, Triss Merigold, and her quest to help the remaining mages of Novigrad to escape the land. If he is successful, the mages do escape but the kingdom then turn their attention to the lesser races and start hunting them down.

Geek wisdom: People fear others who are different than what they are. Whether it be race, color, religion, political alignment or even gender, this fear can be twisted to simply blaming all our woes on who’s not on our side. If we focus on our similarities and not our differences, maybe the world would be a better place.

“Evil is evil. Lesser, greater, middling. It’s all the same.”

Who said it?: Geralt of Rivia

The story behind the quote: This week, we have a trifecta as the quote comes from a book, a television series from Netflix and a video game series made by CD Projekt Red. All of these sources are based on The Witcher series, which are written by Andrzej Sapkowski. The book follows Geralt of Rivia, the titular Witcher, a man who has magical abilities who can defeat magical monsters.

The quote comes from several sources. The original quote came from the book, The Last Wish, which is a compilation of short stories. Geralt gives the quote when asked to kill Renfri. The Netflix television series generally tells the same tale and Geralt (played by Henry Cavill) also delivers the quote during the first episode, The End’s Beginning.

The quote is also said by Geralt in The Witcher video game series of CD Projekt Red. However, it is told in a trailer for the game. The trailer features Geralt returns to collect a bounty on a monster. When he notices that the same people who paid him for the hunt are about to hang a “witch,” he decides to fight back but not before delivering the quote in his mind.

Geek wisdom: We like to justify our bad actions by thinking it’s not as bad as the alternative. But, ultimately, it is a justification. As the quote says, evil is evil and that’s the way it is, no matter how you spin it.
