The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the 1996 horror/slasher film Scream. Directed by Wes Craven, Scream takes place in a sleepy town of Woodsboro. The peace of the town is broken when a serial killer named Ghostface starts killing individuals seemingly indiscriminately. This movie successfully revitalized the horror movie genre, which had been failing throughout the ’90s.

The quote comes from the climax of the film. It’s revealed that Ghostface is actually two people: Billy Loomis (played by Skeet Ulrich) and Stu Macher (played by Matthew Lillard). The pair plan to frame the father of Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell) for the murders and go so far as to injure themselves badly to make themselves look like victims. When Sidney comments they’ve become insane from watching too many horror movies, Billy rebukes this and delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: It’s never just one thing that makes a person do seemingly crazy things. It’s usually the culmination of many different little things throughout their life that pushes them over the edge to act on these urges. We all should be looking at the underlying reason for someone’s action and not what ultimately caused them to act on them.

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the Disney film, The Straight Story. Directed by David Lynch, the film is based on the true story of Alvin Straight who, upon learning that Lyle Straight, his estranged brother, suffered a stroke, makes the long trip to visit him. However, as he has poor eyesight and in poor health, he has been denied a driver’s license. So, to circumvent this, he decides to take the arduous trip on his lawn mower.

The quote comes at the very end of the film. Alvin Straight (played by Richard Farnsworth) finally arrives at his brother’s home. His brother Lyle (played by Harry Dean Stanton) greets him on his porch. Realizing that Alvin must have used the lawn mower and how long and troublesome the trip must have taken him, Lyle tearfully delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: People will go through painful things for the people they love. But it doesn’t matter to them. What matters is that they’re there for their loved ones. That’s what true love is.

From: Cinderella

Who said it?: Fairy Godmother

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes the classic 1950 animated Disney film, Cinderella. The film is a basically a retelling of the fairy tale based on an old folk tale that does follow the general beats of the story seen in the movie. The story focuses on a girl named Cinderella who is living with her abusive step family. But her fortunes change when her fairy godmother helps her get into the royal ball to meet her Prince Charming.

The quote comes somewhere near the middle of the film. After her stepsisters destroy the gown she made for the ball. Cinderella is left alone in the house, distraught. Her fairy godmother appears and says there’s still time to get to the ball and delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: Not all good things come instantly. Sometimes, you have to be patient for these good things to come.

Who said it?: Donna Meagle and Tom Haverford

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation. While the show got off to a slow start, it soon gained a huge following thanks to some sharp witty humor and great characters. The show follows the Parks and Recreation department of the town of Pawnee and the misadventures they have.

The quote comes from the 4th episode of the 4th season, Pawnee Rangers. In the episode, Tom Haverford (played by Aziz Ansari) and Donna Meagle (played by Retta) reveal that, once a year, they set aside one whole day where they can splurge on themselves, hence, the quote. This actually started to be something you would see each season.

Geek wisdom: The world can be a hard place to live in. So it’s actually smart to set aside some time to pamper yourself and just do the things that make you happy to unwind.

“Ogres are like onions.”

From: Shrek

Who said it?: Shrek

The story behind the quote: The quote comes from the Dreamworks animated film Shrek, which was released in 2001. The film focuses on a ogre named Shrek who makes a deal with a lord. If Shrek succeeds in rescuing a princess, the lord will evict all of the fairytale creatures who have started living in the ogre’s swampland.

The quote comes near the start of the film. Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) and Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy) head off to where the princess is. Donkey asks Shrek as to why he didn’t just threaten the lord into giving him what he wants. After the ogre describes other horrible deeds stereotypically done by his kind, Shrek tells Donkey there’s more to ogres and delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: People are like ogres in this sense. While it’s easy to judge a person by a first impression, always remember there’s going to be something much deeper in their personalities that may not be apparent on the outset.
