“3, 2, 1! 1, 2, 3! What the heck is bothering me?”

From: Family Matters

Genre: Television

Who said it?: Carl Winslow

The story behind the quote: Family Matters was a sitcom that initially started as show about the Winslow family and how they dealt with family issues. That all changed with the introduction of Steve Urkel. Steve Urkel (portrayed by Jaleel White) was the nerdy next door neighbor who wanted to win the heart of the teenage daughter of Carl Winslow (played by Reginald VelJohnson). Although Urkel was only supposed to be a guest character, viewers loved the character so much that he eventually became a regular character and, in fact, became the reason to watch the show since most (if not all) of the stories revolved around him.

The quote comes from the third episode of the fourth season, Driving Carl Crazy. Urkel manages to get an old car and Carl decides to teach him how to drive. But, because Urkel is accident-prone, he smashes into Carl Winslow’s garage. In an attempt to control his temper and his dangerously high blood pressure, Carl starts to recite a poem he learned while in a waiting room. While the doctor did give him suggestions to better control his health, Carl decides against it as they prove too difficult to him.

Geek wisdom: While it’s important to control our temper in order to not lose our cool, it’s not always a good idea to keep things bottled up, especially if you have health issues.

Most of my childhood (and adult life) was spent doing a lot of geeky stuff: watching TV, playing video games and going to the movies. To some, it may have been a waste of time. Well, to me, it has made me what I am today... a geeky adult. I actually write for a couple of blogs, namely: geekwisdom.wordpress.com 3rdworldgeeks.com gamemoir.com Please check them out!
