“Constants and variables.” AND “There’s always a lighthouse. There’s always a man, there’s always a city…”

From: Bioshock: Infinite

Genre: Video Games

Who said it?: Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth

The story behind the quote: This week, we have a user submitted quote from Dylan. We over here are My Geek Wisdom truly appreciate you helping out giving out some geeky quotes for all of us to enjoy!

Anyway, this week’s quote comes from Bioshock: Infinite. It is a first person shooter that was set in an alternative version of 1912. The game was critically praised for its mind-bending story, great gameplay and well developed characters and went on to win multiple Game of the Year awards. In the game, you play the role of Booker DeWitt and were hired to rescue a girl named Elizabeth from Columbia, a giant flying city. Columbia is managed by Comstock, a dictator who rules the city under the pretext of his religious beliefs.

The quote comes during the end of the game. Elizabeth takes Booker to a mysterious place that seems to open up to different parallel universes. Booker comments that there are multiple lighthouses that look like the same one he used to get into Columbia. This is when Elizabeth delivers the quote and mentions that there are things that are the same yet different at the same time.

Geek wisdom: Like in the game, there were just a few choices that separated the main character from being Booker or becoming Comstock. It’s sometimes there little difference that will keep people from going down the same path, even though their circumstances are the same. to quote Dylan, who submitted the quote in the first place: Peoples’ lives share a lot of similar elements yet also vary greatly in many great and small ways.

Most of my childhood (and adult life) was spent doing a lot of geeky stuff: watching TV, playing video games and going to the movies. To some, it may have been a waste of time. Well, to me, it has made me what I am today... a geeky adult. I actually write for a couple of blogs, namely: geekwisdom.wordpress.com 3rdworldgeeks.com gamemoir.com Please check them out!

  1. “Bioshock: Infinite. It is a first person shooter that was released in 1993.”

Erm… as a quick ‘google’ would have told you, it was released in 2013 – but you knew that (even if only because logic dictates that a release date of 1993 would be impossible because the technology required to deliver it didn’t even remotely exist in 1993)
