“I can see! I CAN FIGHT!”

From: The Fairly Oddparents

Genre: Television, Cartoons

Who said it?: King Arthur Liebowitz

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the Nickelodeon animated series, The Fairly Oddparents. The show features Timmy Turner who gets into various adventures because he has two fairy godparents, Wanda and Cosmo, who can grant his every wish. And these wishes usually backfires, leading to Timmy to un-wish whatever it was to return everything to its status quo.

The quote comes from the episode entitled “Knightly Knight“. Timmy wishes to be transported to the actual Camelot and he encounters Arthur Liebowitz while saving his parents from being eaten by a dragon. Thinking Arthur would be happier to look at his impending doom, Timmy gives him his father’s glasses. This corrects Arthur Liebowitz’s vision and gives him the constitution to fight as he exclaims the quote.

Geek wisdom: A change in one aspect of someone’s life can lead to even more changes in that life. You learn one simple skill and this enables you to learn a more complex skill. Small steps can lead to bigger steps.

“I wish to understand it. The more I do, the less it controls me. One day, who knows? I may even control it.”

Who said it?: Vision

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Captain America: Civil War. In the movie, Captain America and Iron Man comes to odds against each other and, in the process, leads to the Avengers breaking up and splintering into two factions.

The quote comes early in the film. Vision (played by Paul Bettany) is talking to Wanda Maximoff (played by Elizabeth Olsen) and he states that most people are afraid of her because of her powers. Wanda makes a comment that, despite her having these powers, she’s still a person. Vision then talks about how the Mind Stone embedded in his forehead is still pretty much an unknown variable but it is still a part of him. Wanda then asks if he’s afraid of it and this is when Vision answers with the quote.

Geek wisdom: It is so easy to be afraid of things we don’t understand. It could be about the world, the universe and even other cultures. Something foreign to us can be scary. However, the more we try to learn and understand, the less we tend to fear whatever it is.

“But what is grief if not love persevering?”

From: WandaVision

Genre: Television

Who said it?: Vision

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from the recently concluded WandaVision on Disney+. This is the first entry in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first live-action television series to be released featuring Marvel’s characters. The show features Wanda Maximoff and Vision, two of the Avengers that have appeared in the earlier films.

The quote comes from the 8th episode “Previously On.” As seen in a flashback, Wanda (played by Elizabeth Olsen) is grieving over the death of her twin brother, Pietro, during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Vision (played by Paul Bettany) tries to comfort her. Wanda tries to explain the metaphorical weight of her sadness to Vision. Vision tries to explain that he’s never experienced grief like Wanda’s as he’s never really lost anyone. This is when he delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: Grieving is known for being a negative emotion as it’s overwhelming sadness. However, the only reason why we feel this level of sadness is because of the love we feel for that person we lost. The grief is actually the love we feel for that person. It’s a reminder that we loved once and that love will remain within us. Hence, grief is love persevering.
