The quote comes from the first season episode “Total Rickall,” which involve shapeshifting parasites who implant false memories in people so they can take over a planet. Morty Smith, upset with his grandfather Rick Sanchez locking the entire family up to make sure the parasite don’t infect the rest of the planet, prepares to kill him. Morty says he doesn’t want to kill him because he has a ton of fond memories with him but Rick then retorts he has a lot of bad memories with his grandson. This leads to Morty killing the true parasites in the room as he delivers the quote to reveal to Rick how to identify who is and isn’t a parasite.

The quote comes from the third season episode “Rickmancing the Stone.” Summer Smith is now joining Rick and Morty on their adventures and they managed to escape from some unknown deadly situation. Morty (still voiced by Justin Roiland here) is angry at Summer as she’s the reason why they were nearly caught. Summer retorts that Morty should take it easy. The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes the absurdist comedy sci-fi animated show, Rick and Morty on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. It follows the adventures of Rick Sanchez, the smartest person(s) in the multi-verse and his grandson and hapless companion, Morty Smith.

The quote comes from the first season episode “Raising Gazorpazorp.” In the episode, Morty Smith accidentally sires a child with a sex robot. Rich Sanchez (still voiced by Justin Roiland here) then takes the sex robot to examine what it was designed to do to get more information on the child as it might become dangerous. Jerry Smith (voiced by Chris Parnell) then jokingly says it might become like the Insane Clown Posse, to which Rick insults Jerry regarding how old that reference is. The quote comes from Hannibal Buress, his co-host during the first five seasons. During his monologue for The Eric Andre New Year’s Eve Spooktacular, Eric Andre comments President Barack Obama will have two more years, leading to the crowd cheering. Hannibal Buress corrects the host as a full presidential term is four years. The crowd starts booing him, leading to the co-host delivering the quote.

Geek wisdom: Sometimes, the truth isn’t something everyone will like to hear. Even if you tell them facts and show them proof, there will be some unwilling to change their mind.

The story behind the quote: With a new season of Rick and Morty on the horizon, it seems like a good idea to put up one of the quotes from this hit Cartoon Network/Adult Swim show.

The quote actually pops up in the very first episode of the first season of the show. While being chased by intergalactic customs, Morty Smith inhales a gas which makes him cough up a living being that quickly goes from infancy to old age before dying. Rick Sanchez quickly tells Morty the quote.

The quote is then given once again in the episode Rick Potion No. 9. After escaping their reality where everyone has turned into “Cronenbergs” and replacing their doppelgangers in a different universe, Morty is horrified that they’re not doing anything to fix their world. Rick then asks him about the universe where Hitler cures cancer. Then he gives the quote.

Geek wisdom: The world and the universe is incredibly complicated and full of unknowns. You might want to dwell on your mistakes or what-could-have-been. But it’s much better to focus on what’s happening now and not think about the other possibilities.

While the entire family, including Morty, thought it was just a nonsense string of words Rick strung together, it was revealed otherwise during the final episode of the first season, Ricksy Business. During the closing moments of the episode, one of Rick’s friends, Bird Person, informs Morty that the phrase does have a sadder meaning in his language…
