From: The Guild (kinda)
Genre: Web Series
Who said it?: Felicia Day
The story behind the quote: The Guild is an web series about a group of people who play an MMORPG. The initial premise of the show is that Codex (played by Felicia Day), the priestess of her guild, gets her life turned upside down when another guild member, Zaboo (portrayed by Sujan Balakrishnan Goldberg), mistakes Codex’s private chats with him as flirting and he decides to move in with Codex.
Because of this thing happening, Codex calls for her other guildmates to meet each other, in real life, for the first time to discuss her problem with Zaboo. This in turn makes the team closer to each other as they are now friends in the real world and not just in the game.
The quote comes from the music video of the same name. While it’s generally out of the continuity of the show, the video and song shows all of the other guild members how they were bullied when they were young and how they think they are “the cool people” now.
Geek wisdom: Some of you may remember a time when comics, cartoons and superheroes were “childish fantasy.” Well, what about now? The Avengers was one of the biggest movies of last year, being released to great reviews. The Walking Dead television show has become so big that I’ve seen people trying to buy the original comics to just find out what happens. Even old cartoons like the Transformers and G.I. Joe become blockbusters once they get remade into films. Even a “nerdy” fantasy book series like A Song of Fire and Ice has now become one of the most anticipated and most watched show when HBO created Game of Thrones.
Even though it took some time, maybe some people now understand how “cool” it was to fall in love with the things we were in love with. And that’s a good start.
From: The Death and Return of Superman (Youtube)
Genre: Comics, Internet
Who said it?: Max Landis
The story behind the quote: Sorry for the profanity in the title, however, it was the best way to convey the wisdom from the entire video that Max Landis made. The video is essentially a 15 minute tirade regarding DC Comics’ handling of the Superman “final” battle with Doomsday, his death after the battle with the monster and his eventual resurrection.
The video is extremely well made. If you know the Death and Return of Superman story arc, the video is a pretty exact (but given a comedic spin) retelling. If you’re not familiar with the story, well, the video does give a negatively bias opinion of the storyline. Also, it’s pretty entertaining whether or not you have some knowledge about it.
Also, Max managed to use his contacts to get high-caliber actors such as Elijah Wood to play Cyborg Superman and Mandy Moore as Lois Lane. It makes it extremely fun to watch, especially if you can manage to identify all of the actors and actresses who made cameo roles.
You can go to 15:24 for the quote but it’s much better if you watch the entire thing (especially if you want to get Max’s hilarious view of the story arc.
Geek wisdom: We sometimes let our own creativity be stifled by so-called “conventions” of life. Remember, people believed a long time ago that there was no way we could fly. Well, the Wright brothers didn’t let “conventional” wisdom from creating the first airplane. Now, we can fly from continent to continent quickly without a second thought. Even before that, people believed that the world was flat and that you could go over the edge. It seems hilarious now but that was what people thought of before and you would be an idiot to think otherwise.
Allow yourself to be creative and break the rules sometimes. That’s the only time real innovation can come out.
Genre: Cartoons, Television
Who said it?: Fry
The story behind the quote: This is another quote from Futurama, which is odd, since I’m a bigger fan of Matt Groening’s other show, The Simpsons. Anyway, the quote comes from the episode, entitled “Attack of the Killer App” from Season 6.
A new device called the eyePhone (obviously a joke on Apple’s iPhone devices) is being released and Fry is eager to get one. The retail sales clerk begins to warn Fry that the device is very expensive, he has no choice of what phone company to use and the battery life is poor. However, Fry angrily interrupts the person and shoves a lot of money into his face, exclaiming that he should just keep quiet since he’s going to buy the eyePhone.
The quote became somewhat of a meme because of the utter ridiculousness of Fry’s anger regarding the situation and him totally ignoring what the clerk was telling him.
Geek wisdom: We can be like Fry a lot of times, ignoring practicality to just get the next “big” and “cool” thing. We basically just want to be part of the “in” crowd and that’s normal. However, by doing this, we may experience remorse for purchasing an expensive item that really doesn’t meet our needs.
The first iPhone suffered from the exact same problems the fictional eyePhone had, yet a lot of people bought it. What happened afterwards? A lot of people complained that it was too expensive, you couldn’t choose what phone company you wanted and it had poor battery life.
Sometimes, it’s better to wait for improvements and be patient because good things come to those who wait.
