“Tadashi is here.”

From: Big Hero 6

Genre: Movies

Who said it?: Baymax

The story behind the quote: This quote comes from the most recent Disney animated film Big Hero 6. Technically, the movie’s origins stem from a fairly obscure Marvel comic of the same name. However, the film takes a lot of liberties with the original comic so it can be taken on its own.

The story is about a young genius inventor named Hiro. His older brother, Tadashi, dies trying to rescue people from a fire. While in a state of depression, the boy accidentally activates Baymax, an android invented by Tadashi who main function is to assist people with medical concerns. Hiro then discovers that someone is using one of his own inventions for evil purposes and outfits Baymax and his friends with high-tech armor to take down the villain and possibly avenge his brother’s death.

The quote comes from the middle of the film. Hiro and Baymax have returned from battling the main antagonist but were unsuccessful in stopping him due to Baymax’s “healthcare” chip prevents him from killing. Hiro, determined to remove the chip, pleads with Baymax to open his port. Baymax relents as he thinks Tadashi wouldn’t approve. Hiro breaks down and exclaims that Tadashi is gone. But Baymax says he isn’t…

Geek wisdom: We’ve all experience the loss of a loved one. People die; it’s a sad fact of life. But just because that person is not alive anymore doesn’t mean that he or she cannot still be a part of our life anymore. As long as you remember that person, your loved one can still be alive.

Just because someone is gone doesn’t mean you should forget about them. Keep their memory alive.

“You know what really grinds my gears?”

From: Family Guy

Genre: Television, Cartoons

Who said it?: Peter Griffin

The story behind the quote: The quote comes from the extremely popular cartoon Family Guy. Fun fact: the show was initially cancelled after three seasons due to poor ratings. However, after the show started being aired on Cartoon Network and DVD sales went through the roof, Fox quickly pushed through with a new season… four years after it was initially cancelled.

The quote comes from the first part of the two-part series, Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story. In the episode, Stewie has a near-death experience and decides to become good. His future self goes back in time to tell him what happens to him if he goes down that path.

However, the quote does not come from Stewie Griffin but actually from Peter Griffin. In the side story for the episode, Peter gets hired by a local news program after he delivers an angry tirade at a video store. Peter gets his own segment where he rants about everything that upsets him…

Geek wisdom: There will always be somethings that will upset you. It could be really something huge that affects the entire world. It also could be something really small and minute that other people will question why it bugs you so much. The thing you have to do, however, is not let the small stuff get you so riled up.

“I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love me.”

From: Notting Hill

Genre: Movies

Who said it?: Anna Scott

The story behind the quote: The quote comes from the 1999 romantic comedy, Notting Hill. The film focuses on the love story between struggling bookstore proprietor Will Thacker (played by Hugh Grant) who encounters Hollywood superstar Anna Scott (played by Julia Roberts) when she goes into his store to purchase a particular book.

The quote actually comes near the end of the film. Anna returns to the bookstore, hoping they will renew their relationship. Will rebuffs this as he sees them as coming from two totally different worlds: he’s a nobody while she’s a Hollywood A-lister. Anna then tells him that the “fame isn’t really real” and then delivers the quote.

Geek wisdom: It shouldn’t matter if two people come from two totally different worlds. It shouldn’t matter what status each person holds in life or how much money they have. These should not be obstacles when two people truly love each other.

Love doesn’t have to be complicated. Love shouldn’t be complicated.

“Better call Saul!”

From: Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul

Genre: Television

Who said it?: Saul Goodman

The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from not one, but two television shows. These shows being the phenomenal Breaking Bad and its spin-off, Better Call Saul. Breaking Bad follows Walter White, a nerdy chemistry teacher who gets cancer and decides to manufacture and sell meth in the hopes he will secure his family’s financial future. This starts his downward spiral into a life of crime. One of the more popular characters of Breaking Bad is Saul Goodman (played by Bob Odenkirk), a smarmy lawyer who is familiar with the criminal underworld.

In Breaking Bad, Saul uses the quote as a catchphrase for his commercials.

While it remains to be seen if the quote/catchphrase will be used in the new show or if we’ll see how Saul Goodman comes up with it, it is the title of the show…

Geek wisdom: Everyone needs a little help nowadays but there are times when we can be stubborn and try to tough it out. There is no shame asking for assistance, especially if you know another person will be better at resolving your issue for you.
