From: Firefly/Serenity
Genre: Television/Movie
Who said it?: Hoban “Wash” Washburne
The story behind the quote: This week’s quote comes from Serenity, a film sequel of sorts to Joss Whedon’s (sadly) short-lived sci-fi television series, Firefly. The film’s title is derived from the name of the Firefly-class spaceship the crew uses.
The quote comes from near the end of the film. In order to break through an Alliance barricade, Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds lures a horde of Reaver ships to the Serenity’s position to distract the Alliance ships. While this does work to a degree, the Serenity still has to find a way to slip through the Alliance forces. This is when Hoban “Wash” Washburne summons his courage to actually pilot the Firefly-class ship against seemingly impossible odds…
Geek wisdom: It’s incredibly easy to psyche ourselves out when under pressure. It’s easy to talk ourselves out of doing of even attempting to perform complicated tasks. In order to actually do them, confidence is key. We have to believe in ourselves whenever we do anything. Whether it be relatively mundane activities or extremely complex processes, we have to believe in ourselves that we can actually do it.
Q: How do Reavers clean their spears?
A: They run them through the Wash.
…I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
I think it all depends on the situation that is happening and how you handle it and feel, as well as the effect or effects it will have on you.
We all need guidance of some type in our life to get through.
So it is sometimes you might cry and sometimes you might laugh.
Neither emotions are incorrect to have. 🙌💐🌹🌈
Lmfao… oh that’s sooo cruel
Too soon!
Too soon!
Still too soon.
That’s hilarious, and horrible. LOVE the movie. Seen it over 200 time (I own the DVD). I’m sure that the line is from a famous poem, by a famous poet, but I don’t remember the reference, and, of course, it’s not on the web.
It vaguely reminds me of the ancient Gaelic poem, “The Song of Amergin” – just kind of gives me that vibe anyways. https://www.chieftaintrees.com/blog/the-song-of-amergin
It’s Hoban Washburne not Hoban Washington.
Argh! You didn’t show it! lol.
I wonder if anyone was an Orson Scott Card fan… Hm.
